What do you envision when you think of Bhutan? Surely you imagine monks clad in yellow-maroon robes, with beads in their hands, meditating in peace inside a Dzong (Buddhist monastery or fortress), just like seen in movies.  But that picture is far from complete! There is more to Bhutan than what meets the eye. A whole new world of enthralling beauty awaits you in nature’s full glory in Bhutan.

To begin with, Bhutan is the last great Buddhist kingdom in the Eastern part of the Himalayas. Set in the Southern part of Asia, it is neatly lodged between Tibet in the North and West, while India surrounds it from the East and South. This peaceful country has a landscape that ranges from lush sub-tropics to high Himalayan sub-Alpine regions with peaks as high as 7000m. So, expect a lot of greenery, fresh air and blue skies or clouds, rain and rainbows: the perfect concoction of a wonderful daydream!

The second least populous country of South Asia has its capital at Thimpu and the financial centre is located at Phuentsholing. Thimpu is also the largest city and a popular tourist spot to be included in your Bhutan tour itinerary. Speaking of which, if you are ever planning a trip to Bhutan to experience that heavenly feeling amongst the clouds, now is the perfect time to crank up you Bhutan tour plan. Places to Visit in Bhutan

Paro Taktsang

Located on the upper hillside cliff of the Paro valley, Paro Taksang is an enchanting monastery on the edge of a cliff with clouds hovering down below. The trek to the temple is a wonderful experience, with the weather starting off as warm and getting cooler as you go up, making the trekking easier to complete. At the top, the view of the monastery as well as the surroundings is a heavenly sight.

Tashichho Dzong

Also known as the ‘fortress of auspicious doctrine’ and located on the Northern edge of the city of Thimphu, this monastery is the summer capital as well as the office of the civil government of Bhutan. The main attractions of this place are the white-washed main structure surrounded on all four corners by triple-tiered golden towers. The sight is delightful, especially when the golden roofs glimmer in the sun or are illuminated by floodlights at night, or when winter sets in and the white-washed structure resonates with the white of the snow.

Phuentsholing

If you’re interested in a more urban town, Phuentsholing is the place to visit in your Bhutan tour plan. Located on the Southern border adjoining India, this is the financial, trading and industrial capital of Bhutan. Upon entry from the Indian and Bhutanese Army manned Bhutan Gate, the view that unfolds is that of a blooming town amidst hills and wide-stretched valleys. While passing through, don’t miss the surviving structures that were built in the 1950’s such as the Bhutan Enterprise, Jatan Prasad Lal Chand Prasad shop and a beauty parlour near Zantdopelri Ihakhang. And if you are a crocodile fanatic, do visit the crocodile zoo where you can see crocodiles of all sizes – small, big and large!

When to Visit Bhutan

Best Time to Visit

If you are in for a trekking expedition, clear skies and optimum weather welcomes you in April, May, September and October. Light rainfall in the morning hours are typical from July to August. With the rains come a few summer delights – the mushroom picking, Matsutake Mushroom Festival and a chance to witness the ‘double rainbows’ in the valleys. In the winter starting from October, wild-life lovers can catch glimpses of the endangered black-necked crane in the Phobjika valley, their winter home. But if you are in for a spiritual journey through the mystic lands of Bhutan, you can plan your Bhutan tour itinerary anytime of the year.

Approach to Bhutan

If you are a citizen from India, Bangladesh or the Maldives, then living your Bhutan dream is even easier than you thought. You gain a free entry to Bhutan once you produce your passport, with a minimum 6-months validity. What’s more, Indian nationals can even use their Voter Identity Card to gain entry into Bhutan. If you’re a tourist from a country other than these, you can follow a pre-planned, pre-paid and guided/customised process of Bhutan tour plan.

For Indians Bhutan is even accessible by road from various points like Jaigon-Pheutsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar. As for the rest, you can book your flights easily from departure points such as Bangkok (Thailand), Kathmandu (Nepal), New Delhi and Kolkata (India), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Yangoon (Myanmar) and Singapore.
